Practical AI Help for Locals
AI is here, it's moving quickly, and it's genuinely useful. I think everyone deserves a chance to benefit from it. I help local businesses and individuals understand what it means, where it can help, how to stay safe — and how to start putting it to work without getting lost in the noise.
I'm Gareth Reid, a Mornington local with a long background in software engineering, automation, bioinformatics, data science and complex AI workflow engineering. With two young kids just starting primary school, I want to spend more of my time in the community. If I knew how to be a local mechanic, I'd do that.
But I don't — this is what I'm good at.
I've spent much of my career behind the scenes, solving complex problems in hospitals, clinical pathology and genomics labs, cancer research, personalised medicine and biopharmaceutical environments — at organisations such as Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, CSL and Mater Hospital in Brisbane.
Now I'm bringing those skills closer to home. I help local businesses and people use AI, automation and a bit of clever process engineering to solve problems, build better tools, and get through the tasks there's never enough time, desire or know-how to finish.
What I'm Trying To Do
AI is not just for big tech companies. Used sensibly, it can help smaller businesses, and even individuals, reduce manual work, improve communication, understand their data, respond faster, create better documentation and operate with more confidence and efficiency.
My aim is to help local businesses take part in the AI boom without being overwhelmed by it.
It is about sitting down, understanding how your business actually runs, and looking for practical ways to save time, reduce manual admin, improve data visibility, analyse operations or make day-to-day work easier.
If I cannot see a clear way for AI, automation or data science to significantly benefit you or your business, I will tell you.
I can help you:
- Understand what AI actually is — without the hype
- Work out where it fits your business (and where it doesn't)
- Avoid wasting money on the wrong tools
- Reduce repetitive admin and manual work
- Improve reporting and day-to-day visibility
- Train staff to use AI safely and sensibly
- Build simple, useful tools where they make sense
Just a conversation.

Many businesses do not need a complicated AI strategy. They need someone to help answer a few simple questions:
Understanding the Tools That Are Out There
If you are curious about tools like ChatGPT, Claude, AI image/design platforms or AI marketing tools — or if you keep hearing terms like agents, hallucinations, human-in-the-loop, Google AI, AWS, OpenAI, Anthropic or Snowflake — I can explain what they mean, where they are useful, and where they can cause problems if used carelessly.
- Setting up and getting started with AI tools
- Showing practical business use cases — for your specific type of business
- Creating reusable prompts and templates
- Explaining limitations and risks in plain English
- Training you or your staff, at whatever level makes sense
- Creating simple AI usage guidelines for your team
- Showing what not to put into AI tools (this matters)
Saving Hours You Didn't Know You Were Losing
Most businesses have repetitive tasks that quietly chew up hours every week. I can help look for practical ways to reduce that manual work.
Sometimes the solution is a simple spreadsheet improvement. Sometimes it is a form, dashboard, AI assistant, small web tool or workflow automation. The right answer depends on the business.
Making Sense of the Information You Already Have
A lot of businesses already have useful information sitting in spreadsheets, finance systems, booking tools, CRMs or email threads — but it is hard to see what is really going on. I can help turn that information into clearer reporting.
- Sales summaries and trends
- Customer behaviour and repeat business insights
- Job or workflow tracking
- Operational dashboards
- Marketing performance
- Staff or workload visibility
- Simple forecasting
- Monthly management reports
AI-Assisted Marketing That Actually Sounds Like You
AI can help with marketing, but only if it is guided properly. Otherwise it tends to produce generic content that sounds like everyone else.
- Website copy and service descriptions
- Local directory profiles (Google Business, etc.)
- Social media ideas and content calendars
- Customer emails and newsletters
- FAQs and common question responses
- Blog and article ideas based on your customers' questions
- AI-assisted content workflows you can keep running yourself
- Simple landing pages or website builds
- Practical marketing systems you can maintain yourself
Capturing How Your Business Actually Works
I also have access to simple tools that can help turn messy processes into clearer workflows and documentation.
- Standard operating procedures
- Onboarding guides for new staff
- Internal process maps
- Customer intake steps
- Service delivery workflows
- Internal knowledge bases
- Business continuity notes
As Simple or as Advanced as You Like
You do not need to know exactly what you want.
Some businesses may want a few demos, training or education. Others may want a custom admin assistant, real-time reporting dashboards, automation workflows, website updates, a staff training session or an internal documentation system.
You might find a team of AI assistants can help draft your paperwork, take and reschedule bookings, organise your figures ready for your accountant, and surface ways to work more efficiently — while you are making a coffee. (I help set the tools up; I don't provide accounting, tax, legal or other regulated professional advice — see the note below.)
All are good. The point is to start.
Free, no-pressure — I'll look at your business and see what actually makes sense.
Help for Individuals and Families Too
While this page is mainly aimed at local businesses, I'm also happy to help individuals, families or community members who simply want to understand AI better.
Many people have heard of tools like ChatGPT but have never really used them — even though they could genuinely help with everyday tasks. If you are curious but unsure where to start, I can provide a simple, patient walkthrough and show practical examples that suit your life, not just a business.
Happy to chat. No question is too basic.
Practical, Local and Value-Based
I'm not trying to sell large corporate projects to small businesses that do not need them.
If I cannot, I'll say that too.
Based on the Mornington Peninsula & Surrounds
I'm based in Mornington, Victoria, and work with local businesses, families and individuals across the Mornington Peninsula and nearby areas — in person locally, and online further afield. If you're just outside these areas, get in touch anyway.
About Gareth
I'm Gareth Reid, a Mornington local, dad of young kids at Mornington Primary School, and someone who has spent a long time solving technical problems for larger organisations.
I've spent much of my career working behind the scenes in critical healthcare, pathology, cancer research and biopharmaceutical environments, including Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and CSL. In plain English, that means I've helped build systems that connect people, instruments, software and data — reducing manual work, improving reporting, supporting complex workflows and using modern AI-style tools to make problem-solving faster and more practical.
I'm now taking some time away from the corporate hustle and using those skills closer to home — particularly for businesses and people across the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria and surrounding areas.
I know a lot of local businesses are hearing about AI and wondering whether they are falling behind. I also know many do not want to be talked down to, buried in jargon or sold an expensive system before they understand what they actually need.
My aim is to offer something more useful: a local, practical, plain-English way to understand AI and apply it where it genuinely helps.
